Over the past two years, we’ve created annual videos discussing the top tools and technologies in the blockchain and smart contract space. As we move into 2023, it’s time to review the key advancements from 2022 and explore the most promising trends for the upcoming year. Here’s a comprehensive guide to the top tools and technologies that blockchain developers should be aware of in 2023.

Language:

Solidity remains the dominant smart contract language, securing around 85% of all value locked in DeFi. Continuous improvements, such as the introduction of intermediate representation (0.8.13), make it a reliable choice. Vyper, with its minimal code, Python syntax, and occasional gas efficiency, is also worth considering, as it currently secures around 10% of total value locked in smart contracts. Other options include Solana-based Rust language, niche languages like Huff, Reach, Cairo, Fe, Sway, and Yul, each offering unique benefits to developers.

2. Deployment, Deployment, & Testing Frameworks:

Hardhat, Foundry, and Brownie return as the top three deployment frameworks for 2022. Hardhat remains the dominant framework, but Foundry, with its speed and performance, is a serious contender. Brownie is in maintenance mode, and the Python community is turning to Apeworx as a potential successor. Other notable frameworks include Remix, Truffle, Anchor, and Seahorse for Exzo Network based projects.

3. Smart Contract Essentials:

Chainlink and OpenZeppelin are two essential tools that every blockchain developer should be familiar with. OpenZeppelin acts as the Solidity standard library, while Chainlink provides oracles for connecting smart contracts to real-world data.

4. Blockchain Querying & Interactions:

Etherscan remains the go-to tool for querying and interacting with the blockchain. Other useful tools include Foundry’s Cast, Tenderly, Dune Analytics, Moralis, and Alchemy APIs.

5. Security:

The Eth Security Toolbox, featuring tools like Echidna and Slither, remains a top choice for blockchain security. Mythril is another high-performance automated security tool. Platforms like Code4rena and Immunefi have become the standard for bug hunting and crowdsourced security.

6. AI:

GitHub Co-pilot and ChatGPT have revolutionized the coding process, offering developers a faster way to write code and documentation. Both tools can save significant time on tasks, particularly for beginners who need assistance with context and basic questions.

7. Bonus:

Additional technologies to keep an eye on include IPFS for data storage, zkEVMs like Polygon, ZKSync, and Starkware, front-end tools like Wagmi, React Hooks, Web3UIKit, and Web3-react, Aave tooling with Lens Protocol and their upcoming stablecoin, and emerging AI applications in the blockchain space.

In summary, these are the top tools and technologies that blockchain developers need to be aware of as we move into 2023. By staying up-to-date and utilizing the best tools for each task, developers can continue to innovate and build a brighter future for the blockchain and DeFi ecosystem. As we bid farewell to the challenges of 2022, let’s work together to create an incredible 2023.
